It's easy to become too focused on a desire to lose weight. You can quickly become overly critical of yourself and lose self-confidence or become depressed.

To be successful, you must be filled with conviction, and this requires a healthy self-image and the right motivation.

Here are some suggestions on how to boost your self-esteem.

# Read fashion magazines that portray glamorous models with a more critical eye. It's important to recognize that these images are highly stylized. Professional makeup, lighting, and camera angles are used to create the perfect images we see in magazines and on television.

# Assess what is truly important in your life. Making a list of priorities in terms of career, travel, education, or relationship commitments can put body image into better perspective.

# Turn your attention toward something other than your weight. Weight loss is a long-term commitment; for a short-term confidence boost, try a new hair style or get a makeup lesson.

# Stop thinking negatively. If something negative comes to mind, write it down and then think of a positive statement to counteract it.

# Take time to look at your wardrobe and choose outfits that you feel good in. Opt for flattering styles that skim over problem areas like stomach and hips. Long-line jackets and blouses and long flowing skirts have a slimming effect. Being bold with colors and jewelry to create a style that makes you feel confident will help detract attention from your weight.
